Seeds vs. seedlings: what to buy this season and where to find them
Seeds vs. Seedlings
Most nurseries carry 4–5 chilli varieties at best: cayenne, jalapeño, sweet pepper (not hot), and whatever's in fashion. If you want variety, you need seeds.
The case for seeds
Selection. Specialist seed suppliers stock 50–200+ varieties. You can grow anything from a mild pasilla to a 2M SHU Carolina Reaper.
Cost. A packet of 10 seeds costs R30–60. Equivalent seedlings (if you could find them) would cost R150–200.
Satisfaction. Growing from seed teaches you the plant. You understand germination, seedling care, transplanting — all of which makes you a better grower.
The case for seedlings
If you're starting late in the season or growing common varieties, seedlings make sense. They're 6–8 weeks ahead of seed start.
For super-hots, though, nurseries won't have them. You're starting from seed.
Where to buy seeds
Markets are increasingly the best place — seed sellers appear at chilli events and farmers' markets. Online communities and chilli festival vendors are reliable sources.
What to grow
For beginners: jalapeño, serrano, bird's eye.
For experienced growers: 7-Pot Primo, Peach Ghost, Chocolate Habanero.
For serious heat-seekers: Carolina Reaper, Dragon's Breath, Pepper X — manage expectations on yield.
